Can you do me a favor? Can you take a look at the list below? It is a list of the top all-time donors, 1989-2010 to democratic political campaigns, numbered respectively, with non-liberal leaning organizations removed for clarity.
When you are done, tell me if you notice anything peculiar. I will even give you a hint…They are all unions! Surprised? I hope not. But if you are, then please keep reading.
Unless you are dead or living like Ted Kaczynski, you are aware that in Wisconsin there is a tea party favorite and currently sitting governor Scott Walker trying to bust the union’s collective bargaining power in that state. Now, before this story goes back into the faded news cycle (Egypt anyone?) please take this list and compare it to what is happening in Wisconsin, on FOX “news,” in republican circles in general, and on seemingly every media outlet in America.
The message you are receiving probably looks something like this: (I am Paraphrasing)
Wisconsin is broke and in a state of terrible disrepair because of unions. Oh, and to fix this monumental problem we must put an end to collective bargaining because we all know that teachers, auto workers, firefighters, cops, and DMV workers are just living large on our taxpaying dime.
Sound familiar? Now take another look at that list above and tell me if this narrative matches up with the reality. Let me save you the time…It doesn’t! So what is really going on? Well, if you follow the cardinal rule in politics to always follow the money then what you will see becomes brutally clear and painfully obvious: Republicans and republican funded corporations are making a concerted effort to bring down unions in Wisconsin and elsewhere because doing so:
- Creates a monumental sucking sound of funds being removed from democratic political campaigns.
- De-funds democratic campaigns, which in turn makes democratic candidates powerless to run effective campaigns against their unregulated corporately funded republican opponents. (Remember Citizens United? See below…)
- Gives Republicans an enormous advantage to win every election from here to eternity.
If we can put conspiracy theories aside for a moment, please remember the case of Citizens United v Federal Election Commission. If not, please click here for a refresher. It was all the rage during the first SOTU address when Justice Samuel A. Alito Jr. “shook his head as if to rebut the president’s characterization of the Citizens United decision, and seemed to mouth the words “not true.””
Excuse me NYT editorial writer, but seemed to?! I haven’t the foggiest how this gal can give Alito the benefit of the doubt here, but moving on…
Here is an overview of Citizens United for all you unabombers out there: In January 2010, the United States Supreme Court ruled that:
“Corporate funding of independent political broadcasts in candidate elections cannot be limited under the First Amendment.”
To put it another way from the same NYT “Opinionator” above:
“The court struck down a…statute that barred corporations and unions [emphasis mine] from spending money directly from their treasuries — as opposed to their political action committees — on television advertising to urge a vote for or against a federal candidate in the period immediately before the election.”
To put it even more bluntly to drive the point home: The SCOTUS ruled that corporations and unions, are free to pour money unabashedly into political campaigns to make movies, tv shows, commercials, whatever, without regulation and with no cap on how much they can spend doing it. Basically, it’s a free pass on both sides of the aisle to help their guy win by using unlimited funds to manipulate YOU. Got it? Good!
- Irony Alert! - If you go to the Citizens United website their tag line reads: ”Dedicated to Restoring our Government to Citizen Control.”
Apparently, Citizens United believe that unions are bad, but that citizens should do whatever it takes to protect themselves through a citizen controlled government. I know, It makes no sense, but nevertheless, isn’t that essentially what unions set out to do against giant corporations who seek to destroy them?It hurts trying to make sense of republican concepts, doesn’t it?
Bottom line here is to please…PLEASE not to be fooled by what the media, Republican politicians and tea party backed governors are telling you about unions. Union members are not overpaid!, unions member do not take taxpayer money away from you, Americans do support unions and unions are not looking to make a buck off the backs of the working class. On the contrary folks, unions are the closest thing we have to protecting the working class! Get rid of them and we have nothing left to protect against corporate plutocracy!
If you listen to the right wing you might get confused by all of this logic. Hell, the insanity is getting so thick even some democrats are jumping on the crazy bandwagon.
“I believe in what unions do, but as an elected official I represent the taxpayers,” said Jeff Berding, a registered Democrat on the Cincinnati City Council who ran as an independent after he opposed the party on a union issue. “I’m trying to get the best deal for them…The recent state budget controversies feature union members bargaining against state and local governments over wages and benefits provided by taxpayers.”
For Christ’s sake, union members ARE tax payers, are they not? Folks, if you are still not convinced that this current ploy to bust unions is nothing more than classic political ratfu**ing in order to dissolve democratic funding for future election campaigns then I feel sorry for you and your sad uninformed life.
In the end, as is ALWAYS the case, this is not about budgets or deficits or states being broke. This is about politics and money and winning elections…period! This is corporations and their lobbyists working tirelessly to bamboozle you into turning on American citizens in order to help them reach their end goal of total domination over every aspect of your life. The Citizens United decision chiseled that achievement by the super wealthy power brokers into stone and we are now seeing the effects.
If Governor Walker stops unions in Wisconsin, the rest will fall like dominoes across America. Is Wisconsin going to set the precedent? Will FOX win over enough “independents” to move their cause forward? Is this what we want? To be ruled by corporations, by republicans, by FOX “News” forever?
This is where we are headed my friends. And this is not conspiracy. Look at that list again. This is fact! Through the manipulation in the media and our blind ignorance to even consider it, we are helping to dismantle the very protections that keeps us from being completely overtaken. We are being hoodwinked, bamboozled in the classic sense. Thankfully, not all of us are blind to it. But is that group large enough to make a difference?
Wisconsin already proved that they don’t even take elections seriously. As a fairly progressive state, Wisconsin allowed a tea party favorite to become its governor. It was a fairly close race too. Did the cheeseheads simply fall for the meme that Obama is not doing enough and that we will therefore punish him by not voting, as they did not do enough of last November? Did they mistakenly think none of it mattered and simply stayed home because the teevee machine told then to? They are not staying home now are they?
Do you think liberals have learned a valuable lesson about why voting still matters, or will Mit Romney or Donald Trump be our next President? Have we still not learned why a republican much less a tea partier should NEVER be given power to do anything?
Nah. I don’t think so. If Wisconsin proves anything it is that that we are forever easily manipulated and so frighteningly forgetful.
Jon Terbush | TPM | February 25, 2011 - Citing polling data culled from a year of nationwide surveys, Gallup found that there are more self-identified conservatives than liberals in every single state in America. Even in deep blue Rhode Island, where 29.3% called themselves liberals, even more people, 29.9%, identified as conservative.
So you see, we are doomed! What is right in front of our eyes is being ignored AGAIN! Perhaps it is because, as the chart above shows, the truth is too simple or too dastardly to fully comprehend. As a result, we are continuously tricked into dramatic narratives about taxpayers and doomsday deficits year after exhaustive year and all with the same end goal of giving us an enemy to fight. Sad thing is though that enemy is always ourselves. And while we are busy fighting each other, the powers that be continue to do what they do best: Winning at all costs and doing so for their benefit while we all suffer as a result.
Come to think of it, when has this has NOT been the case? Tell me that and I may begin to see a light at the end of this tunnel. Like I said….doomed!
